Player to Watch: Jameel Al Yahmadi (Oman)

Al Yahmadi broke into the forefront of Omani football as a 20-year-old when the nation hosted the 2017 CISM World Football Cup. He was the standout performer as Oman reached the final and he scored one of the penalties in the shootout win over Qatar to bring home the title for the first time in Oman’s history.

Since then, the midfielder, plying his trade at domestic minnows Al Shabab at the time, chose a different path than that typical for Omani players, opting to move to Qatar where he has been playing since 2018, representing the likes of Al Wakrah, Al Shahania and Al Markhiya, before moving to his current club Al Kharaitiyat.
After playing at the AFC U23 Asian Cup™ China 2018, Al Yahmadi’s real start with the Reds was at the 2018 Gulf Cup of Nations in Kuwait, where he was a key player as Oman stunned their regional rivals to win the title for only the second time in their history and the first one away from home, beating the UAE in the final on penalties.

A year later, the midfielder was starting in the AFC Asian Cup as Oman finished third in their group behind Japan and Uzbekistan, advancing to the Round of 16 as one of the best-ranked third placed teams before losing to IR Iran.
Another impressive international appearance followed in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2021, when Al Yahmadi led his side to pipping Iraq and Bahrain to a place in the quarter-finals, where they were beaten by Tunisia 2-1.

Returning to Gulf Cup of Nations action at the start of 2023, Oman and Al Yahmadi nearly repeated their 2019 success, only to be denied by a 3-2 extra time defeat to hosts Iraq in Basra in the final.
A creative midfielder, capable of playing out on the right flank where he cuts inside on his stronger left-foot, or centrally where his combination of vision and trickery can unlock defences, Al Yahmadi will be the main attacking outlet for head coach Branko Ivankovic.

With Oman having been dealt a tough group with three-time champions Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Kyrgyz Republic to contend with, Al Yahmadi will need to carry his form from the Qatari Second Division into Asia’s top competition as the Reds look to make it a second consecutive knockout stage appearance in the competition.
