Although born near Dushanbe, Dzhalilov initially progressed through the Russian system and represented the European nation as a youth, from under 17 level through to the country’s under 21 team.
He joined Lokomotiv Moscow as a teenager before making his professional debut with Rubin Kazan, who sent him on loan to Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk before a move in 2017 to Baltika Kaliningrad.
From there he returned to Tajikistan in 2019 to sign for Istiklol in the first of two stints with the club in Dushanbe as he made moves to switch his international allegiance to the country of his birth.
That process was completed in May 2019 when he made his debut for the country against Kyrgyz Republic in qualifying for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, scoring the only goal of the game as Tajikistan notched up a 1-0 win.
Since then Dzhalilov has tasted plenty of success at club level, winning four Tajik league titles with Istiklol as well as the Tajik Cup in 2019 and 2023 and three Tajik Super Cups. He was also named Tajik player of the year in 2019 and 2021.
He was a key member of the Istiklol side that advanced to the knockout rounds of the 2021 AFC Champions League, winning their group ahead of Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal, AGMK from Uzbekistan and Shabab Al Ahli of the United Arab Emirates.
The left-footed midfielder, who can also play on either wing as well as behind the striker, left Dushanbe to spend the 2022 season with AGMK in Uzbekistan before returning to Tajikistan to re-join Istiklol ahead of the 2023 campaign.
Once again he was a stand-out throughout the recent group phase for the 2023-24 AFC Champions League, scoring in the 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr as he continued to provided the creative spark for his club.
In November he played a major role in Tajikistan’s comfortable win over Pakistan in Preliminary Joint Qualification – Round 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027, providing a pair of assists in the 6-1 win in Islamabad.
