The Impact of Gut Bacteria on Emotional Health in Children

A recent study suggests that a child’s gut bacteria in the early stages of life may influence the risk of developing depression, anxiety, or other related disorders in later years. Researchers claim that this impact seems to be related to how the bacteria are linked to emotion-related brain networks.

This study utilized data collected from a separate individual where health information of Singaporean children (including stool samples at age 2 and MRI brain scans at age 6) was gathered.

The findings of this study, published in the journal Nature Communications, indicate that children with a higher diversity of bacteria from the Lachnospiraceae and Clostridia families in their gut microbiome during early years are more likely to exhibit symptoms of internal disorders (such as depression and anxiety) in mid-childhood.

Dr. Bridget Callaghan, the lead author of this study, states that these two groups of bacteria have been linked to stress and depression responses in adults, thus connecting these with early childhood issues. Some microbes within these populations may be more sensitive to stresses, which could explain why they are associated with the manifestation of internal disorders in childhood.

The research findings suggest that early gut bacteria can play a significant role in shaping brain circuits related to a child’s emotional well-being. Ignoring these issues may increase the risk of expressing mental health challenges in later stages of life, including adolescence and adulthood.

Regarding future research, Callaghan mentions:

“We need to understand which species [of bacteria] in these broader groups will account for these findings. With such information, relatively simple solutions like probiotics or dietary changes can be implemented to leverage them for addressing these concerns.”
