An imposing presence in attack, the forward mixes his scoring instincts with guile and creativity to operate as the hub around which Uzbekistan’s attack revolves. With his 38 goals in 69 appearances, he stands out as his country’s most potent weapon.
Shomurodov’s scoring record has already seen him established as his country’s most prolific striker, surpassing the tally set by the revered Maksim Shatskikh, a player widely viewed as one of Uzbekistan’s finest after his years of success in Ukraine with Dynamo Kyiv.
Shomurodov has already moved beyond Shatskikh’s record and goes into the AFC Asian Cup with four goals more than his predecessor, with that sum achieved over an eight-year period compared to Shatskikh’s 15-year career.
At his current strike rate of better than a goal every two games he plays for Uzbekistan, Shomurodov could establish a record that will be unsurpassed for years.
The striker’s poise in front of goal from early in his career drew the attention of clubs in Europe, with Shomurodov moving first to Russia and then to Italy after starting out in Uzbekistan with Mashal Mubarak.
From there he joined Bunyodkor before moving as a 22-year-old to FC Rostov in the Russian Premier League in 2017, where his performances across three-and-a-half seasons convinced Italian side Genoa to take him to Serie A in the summer of 2020.
One season at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, when he scored eight times in 31 appearances, saw AS Roma fork out €۱۷٫۵ million to take Shomurodov to the Italian capital, where he linked up with former Real Madrid and Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho.
And while his progress as slowed since shfiting to the Stadio Olimpico, Shomurodov believes he has benefitted from working under the Portuguese coach during an 18-month spell before a pair of loan moves, first to Spezia and then to his current club Cagliari.
“Something that stuck with me from (Mourinho’s) way of doing things is always focusing on winning: you must always think about winning, analysing things through a winning lens,” Shomurodov said.
That will be an approach Shomuruodov attempts to instil in his teammates as Uzbekistan set their sights on success at the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™.
