KPMG Scandal: AI Benefits Report Filled with Artificial Intelligence Fallacies

A company that advises others on artificial intelligence fell into the trap of its own illusions. KPMG, one of the world’s four major accounting firms, published a report in October last year on the benefits of artificial intelligence that has now been revealed to be rife with fabricated information and artificial intelligence fallacies.

Researchers at GPTZero, the creators of artificial intelligence content detection tools, discovered upon close inspection of the KPMG report that out of the 45 cited sources, only five referred to real and credible sources, while the rest were either fake sources or had artificial sections added to real sources; 12 cases were so ambiguously written that their external validity was not acceptable. The researchers named the creation of fake sources by artificial intelligence models in this report as ‘Vibe Citing’.

KPMG Report on Artificial Intelligence Benefits

Recognized brands such as Emirates Airlines, UBS Swiss Bank, and Swiss Federal Railways unknowingly provided successful examples of artificial intelligence utilization in the KPMG article.

For instance, the report claimed that Emirates Airlines has a chatbot named Sara that can revolutionize passenger flights; whereas Sara is just a simple mobile assistant launched in 2023 with no capabilities for transforming reservations.

In another instance, the report claimed that UBS Bank has integrated artificial intelligence into risk management and investment consultancy, but a bank spokesperson immediately deemed this information inaccurate and requested its removal. Similar claims regarding the benefits of artificial intelligence for predicting traffic in the London transportation system and predicting patient admissions in the Manchester National Health Service were also mentioned, with spokespeople from these organizations describing them all as misleading and unsubstantiated.

‘Edward Tian’, CEO of GPTZero, warns that the dissemination of articles filled with inaccuracies by transportation companies poisons the information source and perpetuates secondary artificial intelligence fallacies. Articles from companies like KPMG, citing credible sources in other studies, spread their misleading information widely in specialized publications.

Following the exposure of this scandal, a KPMG spokesperson announced that the company takes the accuracy of its content seriously and therefore has removed the mentioned report from all its websites to review its publication conditions.
