The Australians dug deep despite Iraq twice taking the lead, with Alexander Badolato then netting the winner with a stunning shot from just outside the Iraqi penalty box.

“Everybody knew it was a big match,” said Morgan. “We expected to show the character and quality that we did, and we’re happy in the end because we achieved the win. But this match was a big learning experience for us.

“Sometimes, you have to be prepared for different situations. When you’re ahead, you need to protect the lead, but when you’re behind, you have no choice but to fight back.”

Luka Jovanovic’s dipping free-kick gave Australia an immediate response to Iraq’s early opener, while Panagiotis Kikianis’ equaliser in the second half and Badolato’s winner showcased the team’s composure and attacking depth.
The victory secured Australia’s place in the FIFA U20 World Cup Chile 2025 and kept their AFC U20 Asian Cup™ title ambitions alive with either Japan or Islamic Republic of Iran their semi-final opponents.

“The most important thing for us was to stay calm and patient. That’s why we were much happier in the second half when we took control.
“We had the opportunity to rotate our squad more, which gave us freshness. This is a great group of boys with strong self-belief. What was most impressive was their willingness to push forward, and the equalising goal created the momentum we needed,” said Morgan.

For Iraq, the defeat was painful but not without pride with head coach Emad Mohammed acknowledging his team’s high level of play.
“Before the match, I said it would be a big one, as both teams are excellent in both attack and defence,” said Mohammed. “It was an open, attacking match from both sides. In my opinion, Australia are a strong team, and we are proud of our players for the level they showed.
“This was our best performance so far, but unfortunately, we lost. In the group stage, we did not perform at the required level against Jordan and DPR Korea, yet we avoided defeat. Today, we played at the level we aimed for – creating chances and scoring goals – but still lost.”

Emad, however, remained optimistic about Iraq’s future, citing the young squad as the future of the U23 team.
“We have built this team, along with the previous U20 squad, for the future. They will form the core of the U23 team, with around 50 players available to compete in the next two editions of the AFC U23 Asian Cup™.”

Albert Akbalikov, Catela and Matias Rosa sizzled on Matchday 5 of the FIFA Futsal World Cup Uzbekistan 2024. Their exploits left Argentina through to the knockout phase and Kazakhstan and Spain on the cusp. Ihor Korsun was also unplayable, getting Ukraine back on track with a huge win.

Angola 2-7 Ukraine
Angola goals: Helber (17), Vedo (40)
Ukraine goals: Yevhenii Zhuk (7), Ihor Korsun (13 & 16), Andrii Melnyk (26), Mykhailo Zvarych (28), Ihor Cherniavskyi (32), Nazar Shved (40)
Player of the Match: Ihor Korsun (Ukraine)

Ukrainians are special folk. Despite suffering their worst-ever defeat in a FIFA Futsal World Cup on Sunday, they turned up in numbers and roared their heroes on from before the first buzzer sounded to after the last one did. The men in yellow gave them a night to remember, Ihor Korsun headlining a goal-difference-mending success. Angola’s poster buy Helber can take consolation from scoring, on his global finals debut, a scintillating solo goal.

Quotes
“The emotions are fantastic. We have to thank the fans. They were fantastic, amazing. The noise really pushed us on to run as much as we could, defend with everything we had, and score goals.”
Ihor Korsun, Ukraine utility player

“The better team won. We gave it our all but we made some mistakes. We still have a chance. We know now that we need to beat Argentina, and we believe we can.”
Helber, Angola winger

Stat
Ukraine have now won five consecutive matches against African opposition in the competition.

Libya 1-4 Kazakhstan
Libya goal: Mohamed Khamies (17)
Kazakhstan goals: Suhayb Alghoul OG (15), Birzhan Orazov (17), Zhakhangir Rashit (18), Albert Akbalikov (35)
Player of the Match: Albert Akbalikov (Kazakhstan)

Kaka warned his players against a banana skin. Already without the great Taynan, they would have to take on Libya without the influential Dauren Tursagulov. Furthermore, they were exhausted from a backs-to-the-wall draw against Spain. Kazakhstan needed a hero. Fortunately for them, Albert Akbalikov rocked up to Andijan Universal Sports Complex in a cape. A goal and an assist from their No9 later and the Hawks were on the cusp of the knockout phase.

Quote
“The win was very important for us after the Spain game. The support from the fans was expected. We already knew that a lot of people would come. It’s very pleasing and it feels like we’re playing at home.”
Douglas Jr, Kazakhstan fixo

Argentina 2-1 Afghanistan
Argentina goal: Matias Rosa (3, 32)
Afghanistan goal: Nicolas Sarmiento OG (31)
Player of the Match: Javad Safari (Afghanistan)

Matias Rosa’s 29th birthday will take some topping. He scored both Argentina goals – the second moments after Afghanistan had equalised – to inch them through to the last 16. Cristian Borruto and Alan Brandi were on everyone’s lips when this event began. It’s the lesser-known of Matias Lucuix’s three pivots who’s taking it by storm.

Quote
“I have to give credit to Afghanistan. They played a great game, it was 50-50. Their goalkeeper also made some great saves. Fortunately for us Mati was decisive. He’s having a great tournament and we’re very happy for him.”
Kiki Vaporaki, Argentina winger

Stat
Argentina have conceded exactly one goal in six of their last seven FIFA Futsal World Cup matches. The exception was a 2-1 loss to Portugal in the Lithuania 2021 final.

Spain 7-1 New Zealand
Spain goals: Miguel Mellado (12), Raul Gomez (22), Catela (25), Jesus Gordillo (26), Raul Campos (30), Catela (32 & 33)
New Zealand goal: Art Twigg (6)
Player of the Match: Catela (Spain)

The Futsal Whites knew they were searching for the biggest upset in FIFA Futsal World Cup history. For a while, they threatened it. Dylan Manickum masterfully left two Spaniards on their backsides and fed Art Twigg, who fired New Zealand ahead. They even went in at half-time level, only for Catela and Spain to run riot thereafter. Still, the Oceanians made a mockery of the 12.5-goal head start the bookmakers had given them with an admirable exhibition.

Quotes
“We created a lot of chances and that’s something to be satisfied with. However, we lacked that finishing touch or and that bit of luck. We don’t know how the ball didn’t go in on several occasions.”
Fede Vidal, Spain coach

“Scoring first against Spain was a very special moment. But Spain are a class side, they have a team that can go far in the tournament. [Our performance] is something to be proud of.”
Marvin Eakins, New Zealand coach

Japan eased past Paraguay, netting a 5-0 win in Bordeaux, with Iraq coming from behind to secure a 2-1 win over Ukraine, while tournament debutants were handed a 2-1 defeat by Spain.

Japan face Mali, while Uzbekistan meet Egypt with Iraq play Argentina on Friday.

Group B: Argentina v Iraq
Iraq showed that their AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 run was no fluke when they came from behind to defeat Ukraine 2-1 with Ali Jasim coming off the bench in the second half to score the winner.

The West Asian side can expect another challenging outing when they take on Argentina, who will be determined to bounce back from their shock 2-1 defeat to Morocco.

Head coach Radhi Shenaishil is optimistic about his team’s chances of winning their fixtures against Argentina and Morocco.

“Our team played excellently against Ukraine. The players took responsibility and halted the Ukrainian attack despite some first-half mistakes,” said Shenaishil. “The match against Argentina will be our toughest in the group since they need to bounce back after losing points in their first game.

“After the first stage, the Moroccan team is the best in the group.”

Argentina v Iraq
Venue: Stade de Lyon, Decines-Charpieu
Kick-off: Saturday, 15:00 (UTC+2)
Group C: Uzbekistan v Egypt
Despite losing their maiden fixture at the Olympics, the White Wolves showed glimpses of their attacking threat against Spain at the Parc des Princes Stadium.

Eldor Shomurodov etched his name on the scoresheet just before the half-time whistle and the talisman is expected to lead the line again against Egypt alongside Persepolis forward Oston Urunov and Jasurbek Jaloliddinov (pictured below).

Egypt drew blanks against Dominican Republic but head coach Timur Kapadze is expecting his side not to take their opponents lightly.

“The team will keep fighting with the same spirit and strength. They are motivated by the support of the fans and the pride of representing their country in the Olympics. We promise to keep doing our best,” said Kapadze.

Uzbekistan v Egypt
Venue: Stade de la Beaujoire, Nantes
Kick-off: Saturday, 17:00 (UTC+2)
Group D: Japan v Mali
Japan are coming off an impressive 5-0 win against Paraguay and head coach Go Oiwa will be expecting nothing less from his charges when they face Mali on Matchday Two.

Shunsuke Mito and Shota Fujio both scored twice with Rihito Yamamoto adding another against the South American side as the Samurai Blue showed their cutting edge as they sealed a comfortable win at the Stade de Bordeaux.

With Mail and Israel drawing 1-1 in the other group game, a point should be enough to seal a quarter-final slot for Japan but Oiwa will want to make sure they finish on top by getting another win.

“It’s all about staying focused on our next match against Mali. If we can correct some of the mistakes we made in our opening game, we can have a better performance,” said Oiwa.

Japan v Mali
Venue: Stade de Bordeaux, Bordeaux
Kick-off: Saturday, 21:00 (UTC+2)

It promises to be an absorbing Group A tie and the-AFC.com takes a look at some interesting facts and figures ahead of the match at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium.

Debutants aiming for joy
Should Tajikistan defeat China PR, they will be the first side since Uzbekistan in the 1996 edition to win their debut AFC Asian Cup match.

Perfect record
China PR have won their opening game in each of past four editions of AFC Asian Cup, outscoring their opponents 10-2, having won just one in previous eight such games (D4 L3).

On a mission
China PR ended their AFC Asian Cup 2019 campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Korea Republic and will be determined to not lose to Tajikistan, having not lost consecutive group matches since September 1980.

Bad streak
China PR have lost five of their last seven matches (W2 – including friendlies), as many as in previous 14 such games (W3 D6). China PR have lost each of past three matches, their joint-longest such streak since the beginning of December 2003.

The forward has added new dynamism to an attack that was already brimming with talent as head coach Philippe Troussier – who replaced the long-serving Park Hang-seo earlier in the year – aims to guide the Golden Star Warriors into the knockout rounds for the second successive edition.

Tuan Hai is one that could light up the upcoming AFC Asian Cup, with the in-form Hanoi FC man displaying his considerable potential in the recently concluded AFC Champions League™ ۲۰۲۳-۲۴ group stage.
Tuan Hai made his professional league debut for newly promoted Hong Linh Ha Tinh in the 2020 V.League 1, featuring in 20 matches and scoring three goals as he helped them to eighth place in their debut season in the top tier.

Consistent performances, which also accounted for another four league goals in the following year, helped him earn his maiden senior national team cap against Oman in a FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifying match.

It also proved to be the launchpad for his move to Hanoi, as Tuan Hai quickly became one of the most eye-catching performers in the domestic league.
Thirteen goals and four assists in a stellar 2022 season signalled that Vietnam have a new talent on the horizon, as Tuan Hai finished as the highest Vietnamese scorer in the league, guiding Hanoi to the domestic treble of V.League 1, Vietnamese National Cup and Vietnamese Super Cup.

Tuan Hai also made four starts in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers, while scoring his maiden international goals against Afghanistan, underlining his growing significance for the national team.

Consequently, the Hanoi forward was called up for his first major international tournament, the AFF (ASEAN Football Federation) Championship 2022, where he provided an assist in Vietnam’s opener against Laos as they went on to finish as runners-up in manager Park’s farewell tournament.
However, it is in the AFC Champions League this season where Tuan Hai has earned plenty of admirers in Hanoi’s debut appearance amongst the continent’s elite.

Four goals and an assist in an impressive group stage, which included scoring a late winner to eliminate defending champions Urawa Red Diamonds, meant Tuan Hai displayed his flair to a wider audience, and he will now hope for a similar impact when he takes to the pitch for the Golden Star Warriors in Qatar.

The AFC Asian Cup holds a special place in the heart of the midfielder, whose five goals earned him the Golden Boot at the 2011 edition of the tournament.
Q: Can you share your thoughts on the AFC Asian Cup?

I think expanding the AFC Asian Cup to 24 teams (in 2019) has made the competition extremely exciting. It has given us the opportunity to see competition between diverse countries across the length and breadth of Asia.

Honestly, all the groups look very interesting and several teams are making comebacks after being away for some time. I am obviously most keen to see how the action unfolds in Group E since it hosts Korea Republic.

Moreover, I am pleased to see teams such as Malaysia and Hong Kong, China back in the game as they’re famous for being home to some of the most ardent fans of the beautiful game.

Who do you think are the favourites to win the AFC Asian Cup?

Oh, without a doubt, Korea Republic! I feel like it is long overdue. During my time, our aim had always been to win the trophy and settle for nothing else, but we haven’t been able to meet that goal.

Korea Republic has always given excellent performances at the AFC Asian Cup, but we have been shy of the title for a long time now. So, I am very hopeful that the boys will bring home the prize this time.

What do you think has changed since you left the squad?

I think our squad has become much stronger. There are more players getting experience from some of the top leagues and teams across the globe. Many of them are playing not just in Europe, but are integral members of some of the best teams in the world.

They are bringing their wealth of experience to the team and to the younger players, I think there is also a sense of pride in playing alongside such icons.

What do you think of Korea Republic’s chances?

I think this is one of our best shots at winning the title.

We have an exemplary leader in Sonny (Son Heung-min) and personally, I really want to see him take the trophy. He is a legend among legends in Korea Republic and he brings genuine joy to our people. Moreover, look at all the players around him that he can count on. (Kim) Min-jae is doing so well in Bayern Munich.

I also enjoy watching Lee Jae-sung, currently at Mainz and people in our country absolutely love Lee Kang-in. So you can see, there are so many world class players and I think they have been preparing really well.

How did it feel to be the top scorer of the 2011 AFC Asian Cup but not win the title?

Obviously, it was a great personal achievement and I wasn’t exactly expecting to create records for myself, especially since the trophy eluded us. But I know I took every game one at a time and gave it everything I had. So, I ended up scoring a lot of goals which earned me the accolade and I am quite proud of the achievement.

However, I think I was a lot prouder about the fact that the award went to a Korean player.

Who are the players to look out for?

Again, Sonny of course. Like I mentioned, I think Korea Republic has quite a few heavyweights – Kang-in being one of them.

Given our historic rivalry with Japan, I am also keen to see the performances of the Samurai Blue. They are coming into this competition with a very strong squad and many of their players are also doing very well in European club football. They have players such as Kaoru Mitoma (pictured above) who is in terrific form right now.

Now that I am recounting all these big names, it makes me really happy that thanks to the AFC Asian Cup, our fans can see such great players in action in person.

Finally, are there any clashes that you hope to see?

I want to see Korea Republic and Japan play each other but I don’t want them to lock horns anytime sooner than the Final. If that happens, it would be amazing!
